How to choose nappy size by weight (Australia)

Most Australian nappy brands sell sizes by age. Your bub doesn't grow on the same schedule as the box. Sizing by weight is more reliable, and that's how Little Puggles is sized. Here's what to look for, plus the full weight-range tables for our tape nappies and nappy pants.

How to size by weight

Weigh your bub in just a singlet, or naked, on the bathroom scales. Most babies will be in the middle of a weight range, which means they'll fit comfortably in that size for the longest period. If your bub is at the top of a size range, you're probably about 2 to 4 weeks from a transition. If they're at the bottom of a size range, that size will likely fit for 6 to 10 weeks.

What size nappy is right
for my baby's age?

Age is a useful starting point but weight is more reliable. Babies of the same age can vary widely in weight, and a Size 3 fits a chunky six-month-old and a smaller eight-month-old equally well. Use the age column as a rough guide and the weight column as the answer.

Sizes overlap deliberately. A 7 kg bub could comfortably wear Size 2 or Size 3, depending on body shape, leg width, and how active they are. Trust the fit, not just the weight number.

When to move up a size

Move up a size when:

  • The nappy is leaving red marks on the thighs or waist
  • The tabs are overlapping less, or barely reaching the front panel
  • You're seeing more leaks at the legs than usual, especially overnight
  • The bub has filled out the front panel completely, with the wetness indicator line sitting close to the top
  • The bub is approaching the top of the current weight range and starting to crawl, pull-stand, or move more

It's better to move up a size slightly early than slightly late. A nappy that's even a bit too small is uncomfortable and prone to leaks. A nappy that's a bit too big still works.

When to switch to nappy pants

Most parents switch from tape nappies to nappy pants somewhere between Size 3 and Size 4, when the bub starts crawling, pulling to stand, or actively resisting nappy changes. Pants pull on like underpants and are easier for an active bub. Pants also pair better with toilet training when that begins.

Some parents prefer tapes at night and pants during the day. That's a perfectly normal approach. Both formats are independently Dermatest® Sensitive Skin certified and use the same SeriPro™ silk-protein topsheet for a soft, smooth feel.

Trial Packs for testing fit

If you're between two sizes, a  Trial Pack  is the lowest-cost way to test fit before committing to a full carton or a subscription. Trial Packs include three packs of the same size. If the fit isn't right, you can switch to a different size on your next order without committing to anything.

Subscribers: managing size transitions

If you're a subscriber and your bub is approaching a size transition, you can change your size before your next delivery, or skip the next delivery while you confirm the new fit. Email us and we'll sort it.
